Wisdom Tooth Removal
The Wise Choice
Wisdom teeth are unique in that some people have four, some only one and some none at all. They are also the only teeth dentists usually recommend removing.
Wisdom teeth are the very last teeth to come through, and if they emerge straight like all your other teeth, they generally will not cause any problems. However, for most people there’s not enough space in the jaw for wisdom teeth to come through without damaging other teeth or causing an infection of the gums.
Early assessment by Macquarie Dentists is vital in preventing future problems. Removing wisdom teeth is best done between 17 – 22 years of age. This is because the roots are still forming, making removal easier.
Depending on your personal situation, wisdom teeth removal may be done at Macquarie Dentists. We have a specialised anaesthetist and surgeon who visit our clinic routinely to remove wisdom teeth whilst our patients are sedated. They are a highly experienced and caring team. Alternatively, wisdom teeth removal may only require a simple local anaesthetic or need to be done in hospital under a general anaesthetic.
A detailed x-ray will be taken so our dentists can assess the best course of treatment needed.
Wisdom tooth removal usually involves a small incision being made in the gum surrounding the tooth to enable access to the tooth. Depending on the location and angle of the tooth, it may also involve a small amount of bone removal and the tooth may be removed in one piece or in sections.
Usually you will receive a couple of small stitches and a soft food diet is recommended for about a week. There may also be some swelling and a cold compress and over-the-counter pain relief medication can ease any discomfort.
Most people will require a few days to a week away from work. It’s good to have family and friends around too, to give lots of tender loving care and ice cream!
